Today's announcement came just in time for McGuinty to run in this year's election claiming that he cares for the people of Caledonia. With so many seats up for grab in big cities like Toronto, Mr. McGuinty is now able to run around telling the people of Ontario what a great and caring job he has done in Caledonia.

The fact is the Compensation Plan doesn't even cover the cost of physical damage to many people's homes should tell you a lot. It should be noted that even the person who had their home ransacked on Dec. 16 will receive a total of $6000 from the McGuinty government who has allowed the very people who have committed crimes to stay Free in Homes on DCE. I am sure not one has paid for any Hydro or Water.

Not only has the OPP refused to arrest many Natives while they commit crimes, but McGuinty has allowed them safe haven and protection from law enforcement. Everyone knows that once any Native person makes it back onto the DCE area no police will touch them.

McGuinty spent $21.4 Million to appease

Apparently our safety, security, and suffering are worth $7.8125 per day for the last 384 days...

$7.8125 per day for living in a hell we did not cause!

$7.8125 per day and still no safety or even remote peace of mind!

$7.8125 per day for assaults, property damage and theft, threats, harassment, our families lives in danger, gun shots, intimidation, sabotage on family vehicles and the power station, burning tires and bridge, blocades, abandonment by the politicians and OPP of the very principles and values that this country is supposed to espouse and hold out as example to the rest of the world.

$7.8125 per day as a one time only payout for being terrorized and bullied and betrayed

$7.8125 per day to watch as native terrorists once again crush the life and hope out of a town while the government and the OPP allow it and seemingly encourage it through their obviously two tier law "unenforcement" practices and pathetic media releases that they say "lives up to their responsibilities".

Being a Ontarian... a Canadian has never been more of a disgrace (and that is saying something considering the past year) when it becomes apparent that we a so easily betrayed, dishonoured and cast aside by the very people who are supposed to be charged with the responsibilty and welfare of it's citizens..... PRICELESS

Take your $7.8125 per day and shove it where apparently your heads are so firmly planted!!!!

Caledonia compensation – 276 days late, many dollars short

Opposition Leader John Tory, MPP Toby Barrett call announcement ‘pathetic’

Queen’s Park—MPP Toby Barrett is urging Premier McGuinty not to use the Caledonia Community Committee as a shield from local anger over today’s newly released compensation package.

“From the start, Dalton McGuinty’s strategy has been to throw money at the problem, hoping it would go away,” said Barrett.  “But, today’s package sees residents getting as little as $5.27 for each of the 383 days of this occupation.”

Depending on location, selected homes are receiving $6000, $3000, or $2000 in a one-time payment from the Ontario Government.

“The feedback I’m receiving over this latest announcement is openly hostile,” Barrett continued.  “Is this compensation for lost home value, fear, loss of quality of life, damage to their property, or something else?  Or is it just hush money?”

On June 16, 2006 – at the height of the tension at Caledonia – the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing promised to compensate the residents who were directly affected by the blockade.  Despite taking 276 days to come through with the promised funding, residents have only 22 days to apply for funding.

“I’ve been hearing from constituents who have been deeply affected by the blockade, but have been left out in the cold with none of the promised compensation,” Barrett concluded.  “And as for those who are included – I’m told it’s insulting and a slap in the face.”

As a resident and homeowner on Braemar Ave., this so called compensation package that has been offered to selected residents "WHO QUALIFY, by the selected geographical area" that we live in is a joke.

The occupation, of DCE IS NOW IN ITS 385 DAY, with no ending in sight.

If you divide that by the amount the McGuinty government has offered, that equates to approx. $15.60 a day for about 20 homes, $7.80, for about 80 homes and $5.20 a day for 35 homes.(all approx.values as of today) Is this ALL that McGuinty thinks our health, safety and depreciation of property value is worth.  What about the other home owners within Thistlemoor Estates, that are not considered for compensation, I guess their lives according to the Premier have not been effected. (NOT)

We expected more, this is just another slap in the face by the McGuinty government.  I think that with the threat of elections looming in the distance they want (Liberals) to come off as a government that keeps their promises, NOT.

How can the developer's(Henco)be compensated at full value for the DCE property, and will ALSO receive more money's in the future, and WE the resident's are still caught in the middle of this fiasco, and looks like we are in for a long summer, and WE WERE offered anywhere for five to fifteen bucks a day for our troubles(actually cut off date for application is April 1Oth, so it is even less, you do the math).  This doesn't even come close to our property value loss, my compensation will cover the ALARM system that was necessary to install, because of the fear and intimidation we face because of the protestors on DCE land, and maybe the gas for the extra mileage for the extra travel around the Highway #6th blockade - THAT IS IT

I personally blame, the Provincial government for this mess, from Day one, if the protestor's were removed from the site, or even the bungled OPP take down on April 20th, and then to TOP OF THIS MESS, the Provincial buyout of the land at a tune of what??, TO ALLOW THE OCCUPPIERS "GUEST PRIVILEGES", so they can continue there FIGHT. (What, now it is legal??) WHAT IS THE DOLLAR VALUE SPENT TO THIS DAY??,not sure, lost count of the millions that has already been spent, and we are not any closer to a resolution today than we were February 28th, 2006.

MAYBE MCGUINTY COULD TAKE THE COMPENSATION MONEY, AND HIRE REAL POLICE AND REMOVE THE DCE OCCUPPIERS ONCE AND FOR ALL, AND MAYBE WE CAN GET BACK TO OUR NORMAL LIVES (LET THEM FIGHT IT OUT AT THE TABLES- LAND CLAIMS)

Please do not post my name, sign me off as, BRAEMAR AVE resident.

I think that the compensation package offered to the "FEW" residents of Caledonia is complete BULLS**T !!!   First off, only a select few "qualify" according to those who made the decisions on behalf of the Caledonia residents. I live On Braemar ave and according to the higher ups who make decisions, I don't qualify for the compensation package. I guess because according to them my wife, 4 kids and myself have not been affected by all this chaos these last many, many months. That the losses that we incurred through lost wages/time at work, food through power outages, extra cost for daycare, travelling, gas and supplies means nothing because being out of the "area" that has been greatly affected by the "occupation" of the land. Here is news for you, all of you who read this site, and especially the Governments of Ontario and Canada, ALL of Caledonia has been affected greatly from this !!!  Agreed there are some who have suffered more and deserve more than others, but the amount offered is offensive to say the least. I urge all the residents who "qualify" for this, to tell the government that they can roll up there paper application for compensation and stick it far up there a$$e$ !!  They are trying to buy you off, buy your silence, and we should not accept there TRIVIAL package !! So because I don't qualify for their assistance package because I am not affected by any of this, I can't, but I urge you to do so !!!  For the record they can all go F**K themselves, we are sick and tired and we will be glad to see ALL of you out of the government soon enough.

 Signed

A Braemar resident, who has not been affected according to "THEM" !!!!!!!!!!!

To whom it may concern.

Once again the residents of my community,  my  neighborhood and Caledonia have seen your lack of leadership take center stage.

This so called pittance is an insult not only to those who may qualify for some " terror cash", but to exclude and not even consider the rest of the community has just reiterated what many of us have come to expect from you and your weak and undignified leadership .

I live 200 yards away, yet since my home doesn't border the Douglas Criminal Estates property  I was not considered. This doesn't really bother me as such because for me no amount of money will compensate what you and your government have allowed to go on for over a year now.

The criminal acts still go on, unchecked at times, yet you and your supporters continue to make statements like " well no one died", or "no one has been shot " etc shows just what kind of person you really are.

I want to thank you for providing another  negative  example for me, my family and my community  of what is wrong with the  current government and its belief systems.

I now place you in the same category as those who are occupying your property( Dalton's Criminal Estates), your as bad as they are !.

Name withheld to protect my family

I am appalled at the Government's idea of compensation to those directly impacted by this occupation. It works ot to be $166.67, $250 and $500 per month to those residents.

Let me ask you this:

-how much has been spent on providing hydro and water to the occupiers on th DCE? --how much has been spent on salaries for the OPP.

How much is paid to the negotiators? Isn't Jane Stewart making $1300 per day? She goes home to her safe neighbourhood at days end. Her property has not been devalued or that of any other outsider brought in at the Province's behest.

Do the residents have to claim this on their Income Tax return next year?

This whole situation has left a very bad taste in my mouth.

Would you please convey my thoughts to Mr. McGuinty?

Since you and John Tory appear to be the only politicians concerned about the state of affairs in Caledonia, you have my support at election time and I have been a card carrying Liberal since I could vote!

Hi Toby
Personally I think this compensation package is a real insult to the people that live near the site.  If you think about it, $3000. amortized over potentially 10, 15, 20 more years of pain and grief is not enough for these people.  And that is the trouble....it is not yet over.  I think that tempers and anger are waiting for spring and then will be unleashed once again with a vengeance.  This is just my opinion, but reading the six nations blogs and the local blogs, it is apparent that there are some very angry people on both sides.  With no end in site to this mess, and a government with no resolve to end the occupation (which to me is as simple as saying no more negotiating until the land is cleared but our leader with no spine is not willing to do that),  I am so worried about the future of this community.

I do not live in the "compensation zone", but if I were living there, I would not accept the funds until a better offer is made.  If this is just a first payment scenario, with more payments to follow, this should be specifically outlined to the affected parties (it does not appear that this is the case though....appears to be a one time payment).

Just thought I'd share my opinion on this with you.  Please continue to keep our little community front and centre at Queen's Park.....I appreciate all that you and Mr. Tory are doing to help us.

"Ms. Finlay:

I emailed you earlier today with a few of my concerns. Here are a few more.  I would like to know who it was that decided that my family hasn't been impacted by the land dispute.

Today I watched the local news and heard the details of the package that was offered.  The fact that it was woefully inadequate to offset the loss of property value, let alone the fact that we cannot enjoy, or even feel safe in our own home was somewhat upsetting to us.  But then to my dismay we find out that we don't even qualify for this compensation.  I guess the fact that the parking lot outside our bedroom window is regularly used as a staging area for anything from the OPP riot squad, to a large group of rowdy onlookers, while the helicopter overhead lights up the back of our house is not an impact.   I guess we should just cancel this summer's barbeques on the back deck, go inside, and turn the television up and wait patiently for the government to solve this issue.  Just like we did last summer.  Maybe I can look forward to passing through an OPP blockade at the corner of my street, where I have to answer a battery of questions before I am allowed to get to my home.  Maybe I can look forward to more assaults on camera crews just behind my house.  Or even some tire fires.  Or a bridge or two.  Maybe you would like to buy my house for what it was worth, but then again why would you want to subject yourself to this.  All of this occurs and nobody helps us, or compensates us.  So you probably don't want our house.
